You will need to take a trip to your local auto parts store and pick up an auto body repair kit. This kit should have all the items you need in one convenient package. You should have a screen, the actual putty to fill in, the primer, and the touch up paint that matches your vehicle color. You are now ready to get started removing small scratches from your paint.
Once your vehicle is clean, take some fine grit sandpaper that is used for wet sanding projects and lightly rub the scratch to remove the sharp edges. Then go over it with a damp sponge. If you need to sand down to the metal, this is alright to do. Running your finger over it will tell you if the edges are smooth enough as you should not feel them at all.
If you experience a deep scratch, you may need to add the putty to fill it in. use your own judgment when looking at the depth of the scratch. If you feel it is a deep one then fill it in. use a wet piece of sandpaper to make sure the edges are blended correctly.
Cover at least three inches around the area you are working on to makes sure you get the scratch nice and smooth. Put the primer on and use the wet sandpaper again this time making sure it has an extra fine grit to it. Once you are finished, you can add the color matched paint to your vehicle. Allow the paint to dry and then sand again with sandpaper that has at least a 1000 grit surface. Wet the sandpaper before using it. Apply a rubbing compound and rub till you get a great shine on your new paint.
Enjoy the work you have done. It will take a small amount of your time but will be so worth it in the end. You will have saved quite a bit of money in labor costs as you did it yourself. You did not have to deal with having your vehicle taken for days or weeks while the repairs are being done.
